Helpers in the grove. Thank goodness for granny.

A nip is in the air and some rain to usher us into winter. Here at Flatlands, we are looking forward to it more than you know. Harvest is officially in full swing, which means chilly mornings in the grove with poles and nets to gather fruit for milling. This year, we began with Leccino, the first of the olives to experience “veraison” - or the slow change in color from green to purple and eventually to black.

On deck is Olio Nuovo. Nuovo simply means 'new,' and refers to the first oil of the year. This oil is generally sold before it has fully settled which means it is greener, bolder and fruitier due to the presence of suspended sediment. It also means it is full of polyphenols. These are oils chefs go nuts for.

With Olio Nuovo on it's way, it's a good time to join the Club. Visit our Purchase page to learn more about our membership options; Single members receive 8 bottles/year, Family members receive 16 and Oil Lovers take home 24 all at the discounted member rate of $16 per 500ml bottle. Plus we throw in a few perks along the way.

Why California Oil

We know for some, Europe - Italy in particular - is considered the only true origin of high quality olive oil. However, climate change appears to be hitting the Mediterranean hard and as consumers increasingly recognize the quality of California oils, buying local makes more sense than ever.

The Magical Yuzu

We have a bumper crop of Yuzu citrus this year so are hoping to be able to produce our delicious and unique Mission-Yuzu oil. We have been tickled by several inquiries direct from Italy about purchasing our citrus & olive oils.

Olive Oil Fun Fact

The smoke point for olive oil is 375 degrees F, well below the average stovetop cooking temp of 350 degrees. Canola is only 25 degrees higher at 400 degrees F. So, YES, you definitely can and should cook just about everything with olive oil. The smoke point for coconut and sesame oils are even lower, at 350!
